Evergreen Data is seeking a specialist in data visualization using R, who has experience teaching or coaching others.

This person will be responsible for:

  • Editing existing written R tutorials to add clarity and/or modernize the lesson for the latest R updates
  • Developing screen-capture video tutorials based on scripts written (and clarified/updated, per the previous bullet point)
  • Answering student questions about specific R tutorials
  • Coaching students who need one-on-one assistance applying our R tutorials to their own datasets

To be successful, candidates need an extreme attention to detail and the ability to translate technical terms for beginning learners. Candidates should be familiar with non-default chart types, such as those discussed on my blog and in my books.

This job is part-time and remote. We primarily use Slack for day-to-day communication.

Coaching students and answering questions takes 2-3 hours per week. This portion of the work is year-round and pays $100 per student per month. Coaches can expect 4-10 students per month. Editing a tutorial and recording its associated video takes roughly 90-120 minutes per tutorial. We have approximately 70 tutorials in R in total. This portion of the job pays $200 per tutorial and is over when all tutorials are edited and recorded. We are seeking a candidate who can be responsible for both portions of this job.

To be very clear these people would not be hired:

  • People who don’t have experience communicating data for decision-making
  • People who think data visualization in Excel is laughable – that would mean you have no idea what we are doing here at Evergreen Data
  • People who can’t explain their thinking
  • People who don’t believe in social justice. If you don’t think, for example, that Black Lives Matter, do not apply.

Our company values – please make sure you are fully aligned to this before applying:

Be helpful – We aim to lead students to independence by thinking through their data with them and answering their questions. We customize when needed. We record extra videos if it helps. Whatever students need, we do. Students should graduate feeling like this was the best experience ever. We ask for help from other teammates and we give help when requested.

Be independent – Jump in to your task and carve your way through it. Advocate for what you need to be successful, communicate proactively about it. At the end of the day, you are 100% responsible for the thing’s success, and must see it through even when it is hard or requires you to ask for help. We have to get students to success even when they haven’t been in touch in weeks. Be ok reaching out.

Be a learner – Get curious about new things, wonder why, see if there’s a better way. Take and receive feedback.

Please submit a cover letter and a link to your portfolio by December 1 to Hey@StephanieEvergreen.com with the subject line “R Job Post”.
